High Five Friday #12: Working Hard to Achieve Our Dreams

FRIDAY! :D

Ok, to be honest I thought yesterday was Friday. After writing my exam (which I completely dominated by the way) I felt that sense of relief and excitement that I usually only experience on Fridays which lead me to believe that yesterday was Friday, but I was wrong today is Friday! :D

High Five Friday #12 to be exact ;)

I hope you’re ready for a celebration because there is sure a lot to celebrate this week! :D

This week’s theme is all about working hard to achieve our dreams and goals! I thought this theme was appropriate due to the incredible amount of studying I have been doing lately and some other things that I have noticed throughout the blog world…

I am giving myself a high five for getting through three final exams this week! I studied so hard for each exam and definitely gave each one my all! After I wrote my exam yesterday, I left campus knowing I did well amazing. It was a feeling like no other. I love that sense of accomplishment! :)

My dear friend Chelsea also needs a special high five this week! Not only is Chelsea my best friend here in London, but she is my motivator and inspiration as well! Chelsea knows how to balance her social life with her school life and I learn from her each and every day! This week Chelsea found out that she received a mark of 100% on her final exam that she wrote this past Saturday! Now, if that’s not motivating to push a little harder when I study I don’t know what will ever motivate me! It’s clear Chelsea works hard, but if you read her blog you also know that she has a social life, as well. She is a true inspiration. High five Chelsea! I am so lucky to have you as a friend :D

The next special high five goes to Katie. I have been waiting all week to give Katie a high five because she has recently graduated from her schooling and is now a Certified Holistic Nutritionist! :D
When I read her post announcing her huge accomplishment my eyes swelled up with tears instantly! I am so proud of Katie. She is going to do wonderful things. High five Katie! :D

I know all of us are working hard lately, it’s exam time – that’s what happens! So, high five to everyone for working so hard! :)
And if you aren’t a student writing exams you still get a high five because I know you accomplished something this week! :D

Last week, I shared my love for the new-to-me exercise, t bar rows, which I am still loving by the way!

This week I will share with you another new-to-me exercise! :D
This exercise left my shoulders and lower body feeling DOMS for a full two and a half days – I loved it though ;)

Overhead squats are one of the exercises I perform on my leg day and I am loving them. This exercise serves as a warm up exercise in my leg training routine because they are a great exercise to perform in order to warm up before the “big” squats, but they are also great for opening up your hips, increasing strength through using a large range of motion, incorporating your full body (which you will definitely feel the next day), and, more specifically, working the core!

The first time I performed the overhead squat I used a broomstick, so I literally had no weight above me. I was focusing on achieving proper form before adding any weight to this exercise which is important for all exercises you do. Proper form comes first then the weight. However, this past leg training day I thought I would take a challenge, so I grabbed a barbell with some weight ;)

The overhead squats still seemed easy even with the 20 lb. barbell, but I completed my sets and went on with my workout. Then the day went on… and I got sore and then Wednesday came and I could hardly put my hair in a pony!

I love DOMS and I love overhead squats :D Give them a try, but remember start light! You don’t realize it at first, but you are holding a weight over your head for the entire time it takes you to complete a set and if your upper body isn’t used to it, well, you will feel it - even the slightest amount of weight!

    Those overhead squats look intense! This week I am proud of myself for being flexible with my changes in work schedule and being forgiving of a mistake someone made. A new exercise that I tried this week was doing bicep curls/tricep extensions while standing on one leg. Really makes you engage your core! :)

    Okay . . . I have to confess. I have always thought an overhead squat was a squat to shoulder press, not actually holding your arms up through the whole movement! So to your question (in case you hadn’t realised, lol), no, I haven’t ever done an overhead squat!

    Overhead squats are KILLER! I have a love hate relationship with them haha ;) I recently started doing hanging leg raises and man, talk about abs doms, they’re so sore! And huge high five to Chelsea for doing so awesome on that test!

    You should try front squats!! If you haven’t already that is =) I always feel those in my core more than any other squat variation =D

    You’re the best! Congrats to Katie on finishing her certification in Holistic Nutrition too, that’s great!! As for overhead squats, I include them in my dynamic warmup sometimes with an 18 lb bar but I don’t ever do them with heavy weight…I think I would need someone to force me to do them because I have a true love/hate relationship with them! haha. This week I’m giving myself a high five for writing a post that got “Freshly Pressed” on WordPress.com, which gave me a big boost in exposure and some awesome new followers!! YAY!

    I love t-bar rows – great for making a person feel suitably badass. Although nothing beats the good old clean & press for sheer endorphin rush.

    I have to give those squats a go – squats and any shoulder exercises tend to be my favourites so I’m sure I’ll love that one.

    Woo! I love the picture of the squats :) I did T Bar rows today. I worked out with Rob today and my god…the workout he put me through!! Haha I will have to tell you about it…. I think I did 100 straight reps of a lat pull down? I was doing a gigantic drop set.

    This week I’m giving myself a high five for something else I did today….my first unassisted chin up! WOOHOO!

    Way to go on the exam Meg:)!

    I have not tried overhead squats- I’m very new to weight training and I’m still trying to master the more basic moves right now. I do hope to be doing moves like these SOON.
    New move for me=burpees. I eventually worked up the courage to do them at the gym, and they were fun!

    Ooh overhead squats are killer! But they sure do get you into lean, mean fighting machine shape! Sorry about the DOMS – I can imagine that hurt! Lots of epsom salt baths? :)

    I really like overheat squats, but I’m gonna lie they are hard! When I first did them I was soooo sore the next day, well the next couple days! I don’t do them too often, but when I do they leave me super sore!

    High five to you for the exam! It feels so good when that stuff is behind you and you feel good about it!
    I have never done overhead squats…no idea why though as they look totally awesome.
    I just finished my first week of my new lifting program. It was INTENSE and I gave it all I had. I’m really focusing on gaining so my nutrition has been on point with everything I need to recover. I have been fueled to the max and feeling great!

    overhead squats are a killer – i had to start with just a broom stick too – and am now on about a 10kg bar.’

    well done on doing them! The worst DOMS i got this week was from crossfit on monday from doing 200 sit ups after a crossfit WOD! I was still sore on wednesday! and what made it worse… i had the flu, so every time I coughed it hurt so bad!

      Way to progress to the 10 kg girlfriend :D I think it’s great to start with the stick first, though! We are smart ;)

      I couldn’t even imagine the DOMS you had this week! Crossfit is something I have never tried, but it sounds CRAZY and really hard!!!!!! I would love to hear more about it!
