WIAW: When I was Young…

by Meg on February 5, 2013

A few weeks ago one of my very best blends, Cait, wrote my all time favourite WIAW post.

wiawphotobutton

She wrote about “the olden days”; her favourite foods and what she ate at each meal and snack as a child. It was so cute and such a fun read that I haven’t stopped thinking about this particular post of hers since she published it on January 16th.

So, I’m going to copy her and finally write my own WIAW post that looks back on my childhood and what I ate when I was young…

Breakfast

Just call me the egg monster. When I was young, it wasn’t unusual for me to eat 7 whole eggs in one sitting and you can bet your bottom all of these eggs were dippy eggs, so along with these eggs I would have buttered toast for dipping!

soft-boiled-egg-toast

I would usually have a glass of juice along side my breakfast, but my drink of choice was a virgin pina colada slushie, so my Mom would blend these up for me from time to time!

Not much has changed, I’m definitely still an egg monster, but one thing that I do love for breakfasts now that I did not love when I was young is cereal. I refused to eat cereal. I couldn’t handle the soggy-ness and don’t even get me started on oatmeal… I didn’t start loving that until 3 years ago!

Lunch

It wasn’t until the last couple of years of high school that I stayed at school for lunch. So, throughout elementary school I was lucky enough to come home and have a delicious home cooked meal! Usually, my lunch was Campbell’s tomato soup made with milk and elbow macaroni! This was my all time favourite lunch. I would have it on my first day of school, special days such as Valentines Day, my birthday, and pretty much every single other day…

After School Snack

In elementary school, my favourite snacks were anything my Mom made me ;) Her go to’s were:

Gus and Jack Cheese
Cheddar cheese cubed up just like how Gus and Jack from Cinderella ate their cheese!

images

Jam and Cracker Sandwiches
Soda crackers and raspberry jam smacked together to make a “sandwich!”

Celery and Cheeze Whiz

But, as I got older, an Iced Cappuccino from Tim Horton’s was essential after a day of classes.

My Mom had one waiting for me every day after school.

Dinner

Dinner was always something different. My family thrives off of variety! But, if I had my choice for dinner I would have requested “Scoobi Doo noodles” with my Mom’s homemade creamy tomato sauce.

scoobi doo pasta

I was first introduced to these fun Scoobi Doo noodles at Boston Pizza, but my Mom made everything better, so I often had “Boston Pizza inspired” meals at home (Boston Pizza was my favourite restaurant as a child if you haven’t caught on)

Bedtime Snacks

My family has never been much of a “dessert” family. My Mom baked, but we’d never have dessert after dinner. I did have bedtime snacks, though! My favourite snacks to have before bed were:

Folded Jam Sandwiches and a Glass of Milk
A fluffy piece of white bread, raspberry jam, and an icy cold glass of milk was my favourite snack to have before bed!

Beer bread peanut butter and jelly

Claussen Pickles
If we didn’t have a jar of my Grandma’s homemade dill pickles on hand, these were the next best thing! I’d always want pickles while lying in bed.

As you can see, I was very much of an egg and macaroni monster. I remember telling my Mom that my perfect day would include “lying in bed all day eating Kraft Dinner and watching movies.”

I hope you enjoyed today’s flashback post and were able to reflect back to your childhood, too! :) I think that’s always a fun thing to do…

What was your favourite food as a child?

Were you a picky eater when you were young?

I’ve never been a picky eater. My motto is “you won’t know until you try!” ;)

See you tomorrow!

Love,

Meg

p.s. if you have a high five to email me for this week’s HFF post please do so now! :)

p.p.s. thanks to all of you who were so kind and linked me up with some awesome recipes after yesterday’s post! :) I really appreciate it <3

If you had told me as a child that I would fall in love with tofu, lentils and scrambled egg whites, I would have laughed. As a child, I never would try milk or meat, let alone fish. I was a good vegetable eater but I did not enjoy broccoli or asparagus. Though I am still not a fan of cheese or meat, I am definitely more adventurous in the ways in which I source out protein, complex carbohydrates, fats and more. My favourite foods have always been onions and pickles, but these days I am finding more pleasure in eggplant and artichoke. Snacks include iced cold nonfat lactose free milk, or smoothies and I can finally tolerate hot sauces and spices. :)

This is such a sweet post. Your mom sounds amazing! I felt like I was reading a story book. Gus cheese makes me laugh! My husband, Gus, was named after that mouse :)

I love these flashbacks. So weird to see how our diets have changed!! I was the pickiest of the picky eaters. This was my diet: white bread, with nothing on it for breakfast, white bread with nothing on it for lunch, plain white pasta for dinner, and sometimes a yogurt with a banana in it (if my Mom forced me). Um yah, I was extremely unhealthy haha. I ate no protein or fat, I don’t even know how I survived haha.

Ok, you were WAY TOO picky! Haha

A favorite childhood after school snack was Nilla Wafers and big glass of milk. I never liked drinking milk, but if I had Nilla Wafers, I’d dunk them! :)

Hahaha this is such a cute post, Meg! I ate tons of Kraft macaroni as a kid. I’m pretty sure I ate it every day!

This was so fun! I used to be really picky so all of these foods seem very.. grown up? to me? I don’t know haha my palate was limited to pizza, hamburgers, frozen waffles, goldfish… pretty standard kid foods. Although I could eat kraft macaroni and cheese for days! That’s so cool that you got to go home for lunch. I didn’t get to do that until my senior year in high school!

Meg February 6, 2013 at 7:23 PM

I didn’t have a lot of “kid foods” I always wanted to eat like my parents :)

I was definitely more of a picky eater when I was younger… I also used to have a really sensitive stomach. Since then I have grown out of that and pretty much love every food now :) :)

HAHAHAHA I am seriously laughing out loud right now! You must have been the most adorable child! Your mom is amazing for making such creative meals out of your favorites!
My sister’s favorite snack was white bread with jelly too! She HATED peanut butter, but I loved it!
Thanks for posting this, it totally brightened up my day! I think I’m going to take some Gus and Jack cheese to school with me today for a snack :)

It’s always fun looking back and comparing then to now! When I was a child, my momma would make me a bagel with veggie cream cheese + yogurt for breakfast, a PB sandwich for lunch + some other snacks, and dinner was always different… We didn’t do many leftover nights, rather we called it “catch can” nights and everyone made whatever they felt like :)

YAYYY I’m so glad you did this post. I am dying over the cubed cheese. So freaking cute. IDK what Scoobi Doo noodles are but now I want them. Holy moly that image of the crust being dipped into the eggs is heavenly. Must do this ASAP. Looooved that elbow mac. The virgin Pina Colada thing is hilarious. So fun to learn more on my Meg!

My favourite food growing up was grilled cheese.

My Grandma made it with Kraft singles inside and then when the cheese was melted she would open up the sandwich and put sliced sweet pickles inside and I’d dip it in ketchup. She used to babysit my cousins & I during summers, March Break, etc. so we begged her for it every single day and she’d usually give in and make it. :) Now when I need a pick-me-up meal, I have that.

I was never a picky eater, the mantra in my house and family (I’m italian,) was and is EAT!! EAT!! and if you don’t eat whats on your plate, well then you don’t eat. When I was really young, my mom would make me cinnamon sugar buttered toast, with orange juice, or a Lenders onion bagel with butter or sometimes cream cheese. In grade school I went through a toaster strudel and smores pop-tart phase, and in middle to high school I went from ham and cheese hot-pockets (always burnt the roof of my mouth!) to a bowl of cheerios. On the weekends it was normally Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Trix, or scrambled eggs with american cheese. Lunch was either a PB & J, PB & fluff, or a Lebanon bologna sandwich with mustard. Snackage included fruit snacks, jello, pretzels, or pb& cheese crackers, and a sippy-ice tea or capri sun. After school snacks included pretzels and mustard, utz potato chips doused in franks hot sauce (yeah super healthy!) or a banana with peanut butter and hersheys chocolate syrup. Ahh the good old days!! Great post!

Reply

Meg February 6, 2013 at 7:29 PM

What a good mantra ;) I was under the impression that I couldn’t leave anything on my plate either :)

P.s. I totally went through a hot pocket phase too!

How awesome that you got to go home as a kid for lunch! You couldn’t do that in our schools around here. I have a milk allergy so I never got to enjoy mac and cheese and such as a child. I was not picky, but I wouldn’t (and still don’t) like meat!

I am SUCH a picky eater! I have become a little less over the past couple years. I still don’t try new things off menus, but I WILL try someone else’s food ! I didn’t start loving oatmeal until about last year! I was missing a lot! I actually used to hate breakfast and eat other food for breakfast, like dinner leftovers, or ham and cheese bagels. Now, breakfast is what I am always craving!

Mary February 7, 2013 at 10:04 AM

Oh wow, that is such a cute idea :)
and its cool to see, how kids food differs from Country to country.

I am living in Germany and my family didnt have alot of money when I was growing up [ugh we were actually pretty poor, but only money-wise ;) ]
I always ate lots of typical German bread for breakfast and dinner.
Always with loads of butter on it,(but not softened, it had to be as hard as the bread, right out the fridge, thats just sooo German) and with thick slices of Gouda cheese or just sugar on top of the butter.
Thats what my granny always made for us, since that was the food they had after WWII.

For lunch, we get together in Germany and have a family meal, like u have for dinner.
So we usually ate lots of cheap frozen meals and obviously potatoes.
I am half Germanhalf dutch and potatoes are still my favorite food!!!
I used to love (and still do) just cooked ones with butter and salt , potato croquettes or mashed potatoes with APPLESAUCE.
as a kid I learned you can eat applesauce with everything, cause it cools ur food down. so if its too hot to eat it right away, put apple sauce on top :D

and we always had mac with butter, ketchup and salt. So delicious!!

Thanks for bringin back the memories, awesome idea! :)

I had some weird favorites when I was really little -my favorite lunch was a ketchup sandwich (white bread with ketchup on one piece, mayo on the other, and bologna in-between *shudders*) and I loved putting salt on my watermelon. I wasn’t really as picky as I was difficult though. My babysitter or grandma would pour the milk on my cereal for me, and I would say when it was enough, but 99% of the time I decided I wanted more milk right when they were putting it back in the fridge haha!! My sister was the picky eater -she would even lift the cheese off of her pizza to scrape off the tomato sauce, and still to this day won’t eat anything spicy-even table pepper is too much!

Reply

Meg February 7, 2013 at 11:16 PM

Haha I hated the sauce on my pizza! I would literally just love eating the dough and nothing else

Reply

Kasandra February 8, 2013 at 1:52 PM

OMG OMG, I thought I was the only one who ate crackers w/jelly as a snack. When I was a kid it was my fave!! I’d make stacks and then eat them one by one. To this day, if I have a stomachache, I will have those to have something/settle my stomach with ginger ale. My husband thinks its the grossest thing ever but it’s soooooo good!

Awww! I love this post, Meg! I may be “borrowing” it in a few weeks! :D

I was SUCH a picky eater when I was younger! I the only meat I would eat was chicken nuggets and I hated vegetables…unless it was a French fry! Lol My favorite foods were pizza, cereal, cinnamon toast, crackers with cheese whiz, and cottage cheese with canned peaches. Later, I grew to appreciate more of my mom’s homecookin and I would love it when we had spaghetti her “famous” chicken pot pie…as long as I got extra biscuit topping!
